Successful Career Paths

Our Cybersecurity program prepares you for various career trajectories with a combination of cutting-edge knowledge and high-impact learning with practical skills. Some career paths include, but not limited to, penetration testers, incident responders, forensic and malware analysts, threat analysts, and network defenders.

You can choose from various concentrations in general cybersecurity, Cyber Operations, and AI/ML. The University of New Haven is nationally recognized for its Cybersecurity education and is an NSA designated Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Operations.

No Computing Background? No Problem.

There are two versions to the program. One version is for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a closely related field, while the other is for those with no prior education in computing areas. Those coming to the program without computing background simply complete a set of additional bridge courses on the topics of programming and computer systems (each concentration has a set of bridge courses). These will help you transition from your previous background to a level of readiness that enables you to successfully pursue the rest of the degree program.

Thanks to an ever-evolving discipline of cyber, you can focus on the area that most attracts you. These are the areas that currently show high demand in the field of Cybersecurity:

  • General concentration – Prepares you for a broad set of skills in cybersecurity and networks
  • AI/ML concentration– Prepares you to pursue careers in the intersection of Cyber and AI, currently one of the most in-demand skills
  • Cyber Operations concentration – Prepares you to be the future cyber warrior with focus on operational cyber offense and defense
  • Cybersecurity Management concentration – Prepares you for opportunities and challenges in the field of cybersecurity management and leadership decision making, with a strong foundation in cybersecurity technologies and cybersecurity risk management and leadership.

A Serious Project Prepares You for the Real World of Cybersecurity

You will complete a substantial project that will demonstrate your level of expertise and professionalism so that you can hit the ground running when you land that coveted position in your chosen area. There are three ways to satisfy the project requirement: a thesis for which research would be done; taking a course in which a significant project occurs; or taking a separate course specifically dedicated to a project.

Selected Courses and Programs

This course examines the workings of a Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), including Threat Hunting, Incident Response (IR), Vulnerability Assessment, Incident Analysis, Forensics, and Investigations. The course also covers how to package Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) using structured reports and share with threat sharing platforms.
This course takes an in-depth look at network defense principles and techniques. It examines theoretical concepts behind designing and evaluating secure network operations, and devising and rationalizing best possible countermeasures against feasible threats. Methods of detection and action will be explained as well as the use of a variety of technologies and policies specific to network defense principles and techniques.
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the exciting world of ethical hacking (a.k.a. system penetration) tools and techniques, which have become commonly used by system administrators and networking specialists to secure their systems. The goal of the course is to expose students to groundbreaking methodologies in conducting thorough information security analysis as well as advanced penetration-testing techniques. This course is deeply technical in nature.
A survey of cryptographic concepts and algorithms and their application to data security. Techniques studied include private key cryptosystems, public key cryptosystems, and hash functions.
The theoretical and practical foundations necessary for the investigation of small scale digital devices (SSDDs). SSDDs include mobile phones, smartphones, tablets and BlackBerry, and any device that could potentially fit in your pocket, and their respective operating systems such as Android and iOS.
This hands-on, deeply technical course focuses on reverse engineering of software applications for mobile and computer devices. This is an essential technique for both defenders and attackers in the cyberspace.
This course provides students with the theoretical and practical foundations necessary for the investigation of volatile memory. The discipline of digital forensics will be discussed and outlined with emphasis on the sub-discipline of memory forensics.

Nationally Recognized Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations

The University of New Haven’s B.S. in Cybersecurity – Cyber Operations concentration has been redesignated as a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Operations (CO) by the National Security Agency until 2030. The certification recognizes the Cyber Operations concentration in the University's B.S. in Cybersecurity program. The concentration uses the electives within our programs to help satisfy all mandatory knowledge units and additional knowledge units so our students can earn the Cyber Operations designation within the undergraduate program. There are currently 23 schools in the United States that feature Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations designated by the NSA.

Department of Defense Cyber Service Academy (CSA) scholarship: As one of the National Security Agency’s National Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE), the University of New Haven is able to submit student applications to this national job and scholarship program. These are extremely generous scholarships that provide full tuition and academic fees, a generous yearly stipend for living expenses, and an allowance for books and supplies. If you are chosen, you will have a job working for the Department of Defense if you meet the conditions. U.S. citizenship is required.

National Science Foundation’s CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service program

The Scholarship for Service (SFS) Program is designed to recruit and train the next generation of cybersecurity professionals to meet the needs of Federal, State, local, and tribal government with a special emphasis on working for the federal executive branch of the government. This program provides scholarships for cybersecurity undergraduate and graduate education, funded through grants awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). In return for the financial support, recipients must agree to work for the U.S. Government after graduation in a cybersecurity-related position, for a period equal to the length of the scholarship.
