Kaelea Caporuscio ’21 says it was the atmosphere on campus that made her want to enroll at the University of New Haven. "When you step on campus, it feels like home," she said.

"I was also excited about the opportunities this school provides, from studying abroad, participating in internships, and getting involved on campus," she said. "It could not have been a better fit for me.

"My career plans are to work for the FBI and to earn my doctorate in forensic psychology and criminal justice and to becoming fluent in Arabic," she continued. "This may be a tough plan to accomplish, but going to the University of New Haven has given me the faith in myself and in the University to do whatever I dream possible."

As a senior, Samantha Moul ’17 was elected president of the Undergraduate Student Government Association. As a Charger, she also served as diversity peer educator and interned at a children’s psychiatric hospital. She says her experiences "completely transformed" her as a person.

"Everything the University of New Haven has to offer empowers its students to become more professional and active in our respective career fields as well as in all that we do," said Moul, a graduate of the honors program. "I am so grateful to have taken away those lessons during my time here."

She is now pursuing a master’s degree in forensic psychology at George Washington University.

"The support and knowledge provided by people such as Dr. Henry C. Lee and many successful alumni provided opportunities that most other universities don’t offer," she said.

IVY WATTS ’15

Ivy Watts ’15 was a star on the track and in the classroom. Still, she battled anxiety and the fear she was falling short of expectations. Today, she is a sought-after mental health advocate who shares her story to help others discover the path to mental wellness.

At the time, Watts didn’t have the tools she needed to practice self-care, and she didn’t discuss her mental health with others. In retrospect, she believes discussing it with her teammates and coaches would have enabled her to feel empowered to talk about her challenges. She considers this – as well as the importance of hard work and teamwork – to be among the most important lessons she learned as a student-athlete.

Despite these challenges, Watts says she enjoyed her time as a student. She has fond memories as a student-athlete, from celebrating her Charger pride at Homecoming to victories with her teammates.

What it is: A community for students interested in understanding human behavior, mental health, and how the mind influences decision-making, relationships, and well-being.

Community focus: Empathy, self-awareness, ethical practice, and scientific inquiry.

Experiential learning: Psychology ELC students explore how theory comes to life through interactive workshops, community-based learning, and faculty-guided experiences that examine behavior in real-world settings.

Adventure: Psychology ELC students participate in a guided goat yoga and mindfulness experience designed to reduce stress, increase emotional regulation, and promote overall well-being. Students explore how animal-assisted interactions, movement, and mindfulness practices support mental health while learning the psychological science behind stress reduction, mood regulation, and social connection.

“I cried when I left the U.S. because I was scared,” confessed computer science major Isaura Franco ’26. “And, I cried again when I had to leave Italy because I didn’t want to leave.” It was clear that returning home brought a bit of reverse culture shock. Things were quieter and less connected in comparison to Italy’s lively, social atmosphere. Summing up her experience in three words, she smiled and said, “beautiful, life-changing, and fun."

Spend a semester at the University’s satellite campus in Prato, Italy, or participate in hundreds of opportunities that enable you to learn about and immerse yourself in cultures, customs, and traditions from around the globe.

William Adams, an emeritus professor of computer science, led a program for many years that brought students to our campus in in Tuscany, Italy, in the cradle of the Renaissance.

"I tell parents that their son or daughter will be standing taller when they see them again after their European experience," said Adams. "Upon their return, parents often attest to this fact."
