Department of Art and Design
The Department of Art and Design at the University of New Haven is dedicated to providing in-depth educational and experiential opportunities in the fields of visual arts and design. The department is comprised of programs in Art and Creative Technology, Graphic and Digital Design, and Interior Design. While each program maintains focused goals for its students, the Department of Art and Design, in conjunction with related departments across the University, offers a framework that supports all programs so that we can work collaboratively to pose creative answers to the pressing concerns of our times.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Art and Design is to foster a creative environment and cultivate future generations of artists, designers, and cultural producers who share an appreciation for innovation and an understanding of the importance of the arts within their local and global communities.
The Department of Art and Design at the University of New Haven is composed of the Art and Creative Technology, Graphic and Digital Design, and Interior Design programs. We are committed to student success and pursue a learning environment that fosters diversity and critical and creative art and design skills development. Our mission is to prepare students for productive careers in the broad field of the arts and design through our rich curricula, deep commitment to student experiential education, and interdisciplinary opportunities within the department, the University, and the professional field.
Goals and Objectives
- Creative and Critical Thinking: Foster the ability to conceptualize and execute innovative ideas through visual and digital media, while critically analyzing artistic and design works within cultural, historical, and societal contexts.
- Technical Proficiency and Professional Preparedness: Equip students with advanced technical skills in traditional and emerging art and design technologies, preparing them for dynamic professional environments through hands-on projects, internships, and portfolio development.
- Community Engagement: Encourage students to connect their creative practice with community and social impact, emphasizing ethical, sustainable, and inclusive approaches to design and artistic expression.

Council for Interior Design Accreditation
The University of New Haven interior design program leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design with a General or Pre-Architecture concentration is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, www.accredit-id.org, 206 Cesar E. Chavez Ave SW, Suite 350, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
The CIDA-accredited program prepares students for entry-level interior design practice, for advanced study, and to apply for membership in professional interior design organizations. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design with a General or Pre-Architecture concentration granted by University of New Haven meets the educational requirement for eligibility to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination (NCIDQ Exam). National Association of Schools of Art & Design Accreditation
The University of New Haven has achieved the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD) accreditation. This mark of excellence designates the University's B.A. in Art and B.F.A. programs in Graphic and Digital Design, and Interior Design as nationally accredited programs.
Founded in 1944, NASAD is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges, and universities with approximately 360 accredited institutional members. It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials for art and design and art/design-related disciplines, and provides assistance to institutions and individuals engaged in artistic, scholarly, educational, and other art/design-related endeavors.
