Hospitality and Tourism Management Study Abroad Program Provides Italian Immersion

A Taste and Tour of Italy, a four-week, six-credit experience, caters to students across the University who are hungry for a chance to study abroad.

Last summer, Julia Aragao ’20 spent a month in Italy, taking two courses as part of the Hospitality and Tourism Management Department’s study abroad program. The experience brought together students of diverse majors, giving them a taste of the region’s food, tourism, and community.

A biology and forensic science double major, Aragao, says the authentic Italian immersion gave her valuable opportunities to learn and explore.

The application deadline is March 29 to participate in a similar program this summer at the University’s campus in Prato, Italy. As part of the trip, students will explore historic culinary locations, wineries, and some of Italy’s beloved tourist attractions.

Students will also have field trips, traditional dinners, entertainment, and coursework on their plates. The program will examine different types of special interest topics, including wellness and cultural tourism, and feature a focus on community engagement and research, enabling students to develop projects for the Prato campus and for local tourism businesses.

For Rachel Kinney ’19, who took part in the month-long program last year, the hands-on opportunities were the icing on the cake.

"I got to experience Italian culture, food, and history," said Kinney, a hospitality and tourism management major. "My favorite part of this trip was traveling to many different places, visiting local businesses, and learning about crafts such as making pizza, pasta, and pastries."

As part of their time in Italy, Kinney and Aragao also visited Venice, Rome, and Florence, and Aragao says it was a fun – and delicious – way to explore the country.

"The class trips were enjoyable, and I especially appreciated the informative tour guides that we had," said Aragao. "I learned so much about myself and about Italian culture while on this trip."
